Entre sus islas, la del sol es la de mayor renombre, pues según dice la leyenda de ésta partió la primera pareja inca, Manco Cápac y Mama Ocllo, para fundar el gran imperio en el Cuzco como lo había ordenado su padre, el Dios Sol.

A 3.815 m.s.n.m el Titicaca es el lago navegable más alto del mundo y con 8,400 kilómetros cuadrados de superficie, el segundo más grande de Sudamérica. Dos tercios del total de su extensión corresponden a Perú y el restante a Bolivia.

En 1978 se estableció la Reserva Nacional del Titicaca, abarcando un total de 36,180 hectáreas, compuestas principalmente por áreas húmedas, es decir, por sectores del propio lago. Ubicado en medio de la Meseta de Collao o Altiplano, el Titicaca alberga decenas de especies nativas de peces, algunas de las cuales son aprovechadas por las pobladores de la zona, además de anfibios y aves.

El Titicaca infliue en el clíma de 20.000 kilómetros cuadrados del Altiplano Norte, haciendo a los suelos cercanos aptos y ricos para la agricultita. CORREDOR QUECHUA

Sillustani
Silenciosa y altiva necrópolis donde se yerguen las famosas Chullpas o monumentos cilíndricos que guardan restos humanos de nobles Mallkus o Señores del lugar. Es el más conocido patrimonio arqueológico de Puno.

Pukara

Lampa

Tinajani

Tarukani
Rodal de Puyas Raimondi de gran extensión. La puya crece hasta llegar a 12 mts, de altura. Se encuentra a 12 Kms. Al Oeste de la cañada de Tinajani.

Ayaviri
Ciudad andina al pie del Kolkeparke. Edificada a 139 Kms. De Puno, cuenta con monumentos arquitectónicos y arqueológicos. Aguas termales de Pocpoquella.

Santa Rosa

Ubicado a 105 Kms. De Puno, cuenta con templos que datan de los siglos XVII y XVIII, construídos en arenisca rosada y con altares en pan de oro.

Zepita
La iglesia es considerada como obra maestra de la arquitectura colonial. Fue construída por frailes dominicos en el siglo XVIII.

Desaguadero
Ciudad fronteriza y puente internacional con Bolivia. Se encuentra a 174 Km. de Puno. En las alturas de la provincia hay vestigios de arte rupestre en Pizacoma, con una antigüedad de 10,000 años AC. Y fortaleza de Tanka Tanka.

Yunguyo
A 136 Kms. de la ciudad de Puno y a sólo 10 Kms de Copacabana. En esta provincia se encuentra parte del Lago Wiñaymarca (Titikaka menor), con un conjunto de pequeñas islas donde inicia su periplo fundativo el Inca Manko Cápac y su consorte.

Puno es sin lugar a dudas uno de los destinos más atractivos del Perú y uno de los más interesantes en el continente: pocas ciudades tienen el privilegio de ubicarse a orillas de una maravilla de la naturaleza como el Titicaca, el lago navegable más alto del mundo.

Cuenta la leyenda que de sus aguas emergieron Manco Cápac y Mama Ocllo, míticos fundadores del imperio de los incas. Lo cierto es que en la región se desarrolló una de las culturas pre-incas más importantes, la Tiahuanaco, máxima expresión del antiguo puAeblo Aymara.

La fundación española de la ciudad data de 1668. Es una ciudad rica en expresiones del arte mestizo local: balcones coloniales, arcos de piedra labrada, iglesias barrocas y museos con estupendas piezas de arte textil y cerámico. Sin embargo, quizás los mayores atractivos del lugar se encuentren a escasas diez cuadras de la Plaza de Armas, en las aguas del Titicaca: una vasta superficie de 8.560 km2 que los lugareños surcan hábilmente en embarcaciones hechas de totora, una especie de junco que crece en las orillas del lago (o en lanchas, cuando se trata de atender al visitante).

En el Titicaca existen numerosas islas, cada una con sus propias características y peculiaridades. En la isla de los Uros, cuyos habitantes descienden de uno de los pueblos más antiguos de América, se encuentran las típicas viviendas hechas con totora,. En Taquile, por otro lado, se practican aún las antiguas técnicas del tejido que el turista puede aprender si decide aceptar la habitual hospitalidad de sus moradores. En otras ciudades del departamento, como Pucará, es la alfarería la que ha alcanzado renombre internacional, y en Sillustani aún se pueden apreciar las chullpas (construcciones de piedra) de los Tiahuanaco. Por lo demás, sus fiestas y bailes tradicionales, como las de la Virgen de la Candelaria o la famosa danza de la "Diablada", celebradas en el mes de febrero, son el marco ideal para un viaje realmente inolvidable.
